Mathews supervisors spent much of Tuesday night’s meeting discussing the county’s ongoing dilemma with the Hole in the Wall Waterfront Grill, but came to no resolution on the matter.
Advertised as a public hearing “to obtain input from Mathews County taxpayers as to whether or not the county should spend approximately $307,000 to repair the unsafe structure,” which is located on Gwynn’s Island, the board decided afterward not to take a vote on the matter. Chairman Dave Jones explained that the owner of the business, Mac Casale, still has legal remedies he can take regarding the matter.
Jones said that Casale has applied for a variance from the zoning ordinance, a matter that will come before the Mathews County Board of Zoning Appeals, and accused Casale’s legal representative, the law firm Kaufman & Canoles, of exerting legislative privilege to delay the matter because the attorney representing Casale is a member of the Virginia General Assembly.
