Nighttime training

Local and regional first responders attended a nighttime marine training exercise on the York River Friday evening. Participants during the event, hosted by Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, included Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue, York County Fire and Life Safety, Camp Peary Fire and Rescue, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, Virginia Marine Resource Commission and West Point Volunteer Fire Department. The group of over 50 participants was asked to respond to the report of multiple kayakers overboard as a result of a storm blowing through. During the middle on the exercise, an additional “emergency” came in as an overdue boater at the entrance of the Perrin River. After the training, a debriefing session was held to determine ways to improve in the future, according to AVFRS spokesperson
