As part of the federal government’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2022, Virginia provided funding to all 133 counties for the purpose of increasing visitor engagement and assisting with recovery of the tourism and hospitality industries.
Due to the lack of cell service for GPS use in this remote locality, it was evident that a major update to Mathews County directional signage was needed so travelers are aware of the additional site options for outdoor activities, a release stated.
This summer, the Mathews County Visitor and Information Center, in partnership with county leaders, implemented this infrastructure improvement with the addition of directional signage to outdoor recreation and landings.
The new signage directs visitors through the downtown area filled with small businesses and restaurants, and beyond to the coastal areas.
