A reception to introduce the public to the new Cobbs Creek Arts Center in Mathews County will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, at 61 Cobbs Creek Lane.
Josie Thorpe, founder of the center and owner of the building, said she would like to hear from local artists, writers, performers and others to find out what they’re looking for in terms of rental space, both for daily work activities and for performances.
Built in the early 1990s, the former church building is currently undergoing some remodeling by Bush Construction Corporation of Williamsburg to provide a performance space that will comfortably seat 100-plus people, a reception hall for smaller gatherings, an adjacent kitchen, and up to nine rooms that will serve as small-to-medium artists’ studios. Electric and HVAC systems are undergoing upgrades, as well.
The building has a wide entry hall that opens into the former sanctuary. The former pulpit area has been redesigned as a large, 38-foot-wide stage, with ample backstage...
