New circuit judge

Former Gloucester District Court Judge R. Bruce Long, at right, was sworn in as a circuit court judge in May 2009 by his predecessor, Judge William H. Shaw III, who had retired the day before. Long’s wife, Joy Long, held the Bible for the ceremonial proceedings presided over by Ninth Circuit Chief Justice Thomas B. Hoover. During the ceremony, Long announced his accord with the selection by Hoover and Ninth Circuit Judge Samuel T. Powell III of Shaw’s son, Jeffrey W. Shaw, to replace Long temporarily in Gloucester District Court. After serving on the district court bench for about five years, Jeffrey Shaw was appointed as Long’s successor in Gloucester Circuit Court, where he still serves as presiding judge today.
