Sunday’s service of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, held at the gazebo on the island park, attracted 140 worshipers to honor local first responders and to remember those who died on Sept. 11, 2001 in the terrorist attacks. Representatives of the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office, Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, and Mathews Animal Control were in attendance, and were guests of honor at a luncheon following the service.
