Gloucester County has received “No Discharge Zone” (NDZ) signs to support open waterways for the harvesting of oysters and improving water quality.
The signs are provided for display by the Department of Environmental Quality, the Clean & Green Advisory Committee and Gloucester County Clean Community for anyone residing on Sarah Creek or Perrin River.
An NDZ designation prohibits the discharge of treated waste from marine sanitation devices on board marine vessels. DEQ oversees the NDZ process in Virginia. States cannot make NDZ designations, they must petition the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for an NDZ designation for a specific waterway.
Those interested in posting one of these signs on their property are asked to call Clean Community at 804-693-5370 or stop by the Stewart Building, located at 6382 Main Street.
