The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office hosted its first National Night Out Tuesday at Mathews High School, and a huge crowd turned out to the event to play games, grab a bite to eat, have fun and celebrate the spirit of community. Churches, civic groups and others all set up booths along the track around the football field, offering food and drink, face-painting, a bounce house and much more. The event also featured a DJ, a “Battle Zone” with Nerf guns and balls, a water slide and a tent filled with live butterflies. Above, volunteer John Russell of Mathews Chapel Church lends a hand to 6-year-old Alexander Sewell, who operates a mini bulldozer.
