The Gloucester High School varsity softball team lost to the Nansemond River Warriors, 5-0, last Wednesday, May 24, ending Gloucester’s season.
The Lady Dukes entered the bottom of the sixth inning with the Warriors in a scoreless tie. Senior pitcher Sadie Bowden baffled the Warrior hitters with an assortment of curveballs and off-speed pitches, combined with the occasional fast ball and rise ball to keep them off the scoreboard.
However, with one out in the sixth inning, the Warriors put together five hits to score five runs to put away Gloucester, 5-0. The five-run sixth inning ended a 15.1 inning scoreless streak for Bowden.
Bowden wiggled in and out of trouble on the mound during the contest. A running catch down the left field line by Hannah Horsley and a pop-up to Kaia Hutton ended the first inning with runners in scoring position.
