NAACP chapter to mark 80 years at dinner

The Mathews Branch of the NAACP will celebrate its 80th anniversary at its annual Freedom Fund Dinner, to be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Church of Francis de Sales, 176 Lovers Lane.
Gaylene Kanoyton, president of the Hampton Branch and vice president of the NAACP Virginia State Conference, will be the guest speaker.
The Mathews Branch was founded in 1944 by a group of citizens assisted by leaders of the Gloucester NAACP branch, founded in 1939. Abraham Parrish was the first president.
