MVFD holds awards banquet

The Mathews Volunteer Fire Department held its annual awards banquet on Saturday at the Piankatank Ruritan Club in Hudgins.
President Donnie Lewis kicked off the banquet by thanking all who were able to attend and thanking Richardson’s Café for providing a delicious supper for department members and their guests.
He introduced the evening’s keynote speaker. Larry Logan, a career and volunteer firefighter out of Roanoke, and father to active Mathews firefighter Paul Logan and grandfather to active Mathews firefighter L.J. Logan, spoke about what makes MVFD a great organization, and ways to keep it great.
Chief Ronnie Lewis recognized Emergency Services personnel Sheriff April Edwards, Dispatch Supervisor Laura Carson, and volunteer Robert Brown. He also called on guests to remember fallen Mathews firefighters—Billy Godsey, James “Jimmy” Stewart Jr. and James “Bullet” Hudgins.
