A multiple vehicle accident on Route 17 south of White Marsh shut down traffic for several hours Tuesday morning, according to Robert Parlett of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad. The accident was called in at 7:03 a.m., and southbound traffic was closed until about 9:30, he said. There were two people trapped and AVFR crews had to take the top off one truck to extract the motorist, Parlett said. All were transported to local hospitals; there were no fatalities, he said. Response included two ambulances from Abingdon, one from Gloucester, as well as three AVFR engines and a rescue truck.
