Motorcyclist dies in Woods Cross Roads crash

A three-vehicle crash on Sunday afternoon at Woods Cross Roads resulted in the death of a motorcyclist, according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police.

At approximately 12:20 p.m., state police responded to the crash at the intersection of Route 17 and Woods Cross Road in northern Gloucester.

Preliminary investigations, Anaya said, reveal that the driver of a 2019 Nissan sedan was traveling eastbound on Davenport Road, when he failed to yield at the intersection and struck a 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling northbound on Route 17. The motorcycle then struck a 2013 Chevrolet sedan that was stopped at the stop sign, westbound on Woods Cross Road at Route 17.

The driver of the motorcycle, Jack John Russo Jr., 68, of Norfolk, and his passenger, Angela Marie Russo, 56, were both thrown from the motorcycle. Both were taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center with serious, life-threatening injuries; Jack Russo eventually succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet sedan did not suffer injuries. The driver of the Nissan was charged with reckless driving at the scene. Neither speed nor alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, the VSP reported.

This was the fifth fatality in Gloucester this year. The crash remains under investigation.
