This Saturday will bring the 20th annual Golf Tournament sponsored by the Samaritan Group, Inc., of Gloucester. Held at the Piankatank Golf Club in Middlesex, it’s a big fundraiser for this group which works diligently to support the needs of Gloucester’s children and families.
Homemade cakes have also played an important role for many of these 20 years. Besides coming to play golf, it appears the players come for the cakes too.
“We used to give them as a door prize,” Bobby Ray explained. “We would put a number corresponding to a cake number on the bottom of their lunch bags. Not everyone would get a cake, so we noticed they had caught on and were only picking up the lunch bags with a number on the bottom. Even placing the numbers elsewhere, they would look for those numbers and put back a lunch that did not contain one. We learned how much they liked cake so thought it would be another good fundraiser. That’s when we decided to change it to a raffle...
