Monument property transfer not expected to be considered

While there has been recent speculation in Mathews about whether the county’s board of supervisors would vote to transfer ownership of the Confederate monument and the portion of the court green where it stands to a Confederate organization during next week’s board meeting, the board chairman indicated he doesn’t expect that to happen.
The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will hold its final meeting of 2023 at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the historic courthouse.
“I don’t know how many times I have to tell people I’m just not gonna vote to give the monument away,” chairman Dave Jones said during a telephone interview. Jones said that two other members of the five-member board had told him they would not vote for it either, and he did not intend to include a discussion of the matter on the December agenda.
“If somebody throws a motion out there under supervisors’ reports, my vote will be ‘nay,’” he said.
