The Mathews Land Conservancy will hold a free, one-hour presentation on “Predator-Prey Interaction in the Chesapeake Bay.” The program will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the Williams Wharf Landing Community Center, 1039 Williams Wharf Road, Mathews.
Predator-prey interactions play a major role in determining the health of aquatic communities, a release stated. As one organism eats another, a food chain is formed. Each organism within a food web is connected to and depends on others for food. A healthy ecosystem is one with a balanced food web. So how do we know we have a healthy or threatened ecosystem?
Debra Gauthier of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science will explain and demonstrate methods used to determine the health of the Chesapeake Bay and nearshore Mid-Atlantic food webs. Gauthier is Chief of GIS and Web Operations for the Multispecies Research Group (MRG) and a Marine Scientist in the Natural Resources section.
