MLC holds lecture on living shorelines

The Mathews Land Conservancy recently continued its series of quarterly environmentally focused educational lectures.
February’s speaker was Mary-Margaret McKinney, Director of Coastal Restoration for Native Shorelines, a division of Davey Resource Group. Native Shorelines is a North Carolina company dedicated to designing, permitting, and installing living shorelines.
“Erosion, exacerbated by sea level rise, subsidence, and storms, is literally eating away at our coastlines,” noted McKinney. “A nature-based solution such as a living shoreline for protection is a default stabilization method for tidal shorelines in Virginia,” she continued.
Sea level rise is leading to higher tides more often, and erosion in areas not previously impacted. Mathews County along with other coastal communities face constant challenges from shoreline erosion.
