Miriam Post Menges Brannan (Postie), 78, passed away on April 5, 2023 at VCU Hospital in Richmond, Va., after suffering a stroke while recovering from surgery.
Postie was preceded in death by her parents, Martin J. and Margaret S. Menges, and grandson, Alex Puent.
Miriam was fondly known to her family and friends as “Postie.” She was born on July 9, 1944 in Seaford, Va., in York County. She graduated from York High School in 1962 and received her B.A. in Fine Arts from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., in 1967. In the early ’70s she and her parents moved to Hudgins in Mathews County where she continued to reside after her parents died. Postie and Larry Brannan married in 2013, and later moved from Mathews to Lanexa, Va. Postie was very proud of her community service in Mathews, where she was an active participant in the local Red Cross Blood Drives for many years as well as in Mathews Market Days, and helped a number of county residents apply for federal disability benefits. She was an artistic and creative person who loved to sew, paint, write poetry, and help others. Many of her creations hang in her family’s homes. She frequently created handmade cards from her drawings and paintings, and often shared them as her holiday greetings.
Postie is survived by her husband, Larry Brannan of Lanexa, and his daughter, Kelly Puent (husband Tim Puent); grandchildren, Sam Puent (wife Kayla Puent), Shea Puent, Gavin Puent, and two great-grandchildren, all from Minnesota. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including her “Minnesota Kids” and others on the Brannan side of the family from places throughout the United States. Postie is also survived by her “big sister,” Louise Menges (husband Fred Blystone), and Louise’s daughter, Debi Helseth (husband Glenn Helseth), all of Williamsburg; her brother, Martin J. Menges Jr. of Gloucester, Va., and his daughters, Catherine, Rebecca, and Elizabeth, and her brother, Charles L. Menges of Richmond, Va. (wife Penelope W. Kyle), and their son, Kyle, and daughters Whitley and Patricia Lee.
Visitation will be held at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, on Thursday, April 13 from 12-1 p.m., followed by a service at 1 o’clock. She will be buried alongside her parents in H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins.
