Once you turn onto Hickory Fork Road in Gloucester, within a couple miles you will see a sign reading, “The Farm on Hickory Fork;” stop by.
Kyle and Katie Spruill are owners of this 10-acre mini-farm, producing all sorts of seasonal vegetables, eggs, chicken ready for the oven, and seven varieties of homemade breads. Their days start early to the sound of roosters crowing.
In 2020, living in Virginia Beach and with Kyle having had some health problems, they decided to make a lifestyle change. They wanted to be where they would have more space to grow what they ate and with enough land to expand. Gloucester fit the requirements.
“We do not have any agriculture background,” Kyle explained, “but we started studying and learning each step as we added more to the farm and we are still learning.”
The Spruills have in four years assembled a livestock population which includes goats, pigs, ducks, turkeys, chickens, one goose and sheep.
