MILDRED PULLER HUDGINS

Mildred Puller Hudgins, born in Caroline County, Va., on June 3, 1932, passed away on June 26, 2024. She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Rachel “Jack” Harris, and her brother, William “Buddy” Puller.

Mildred is survived by her husband of 67 years, Ellis Guy Hudgins; son, Guy Lane Hudgins (Rita); granddaughters, Rebecca Hudgins and Nicole Lowe; grandson, Jerry Lowe (Jess), and two great-granddaughters, Ryan and Olivia.

After graduating from Madison College (now James Madison University), Mildred was appointed Home Economics teacher at Mathews High School. She left teaching to become a Home Economist at VEPCO and was later named Mathews County’s first female Extension agent. Mildred retired from county service in 1993.

Mildred was involved with 4-H throughout her life, forming the first Homemakers club in Mathews in 1974. Mildred was an active member of the Mathews Market Days committee and was chosen as the first honorary mayor of the event in 1989. After retirement, she remained active with Market Days and provided beautiful flower arrangements weekly to Mathews Baptist Church.

The family would like to extend a huge thank-you to Karen Harvey and Vickie Hall, wonderful caregivers these last three years.

The family received friends on Sunday, June 30, 2024, from 3-5 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, Va. A funeral service was held at the funeral home on Monday, July 1, 2024, at 11 a.m. Interment followed at H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins, Va.
