MHS wrestlers win region; head to state tournament

For the second year in a row, the Mathews High School claimed the VHSL Region 1A title, coming on top out of a field of eight teams. Mathews had nine wrestlers place for VHSL Class 1 state championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Salem Civic Center.
Mathews High School will hold a schoolwide sendoff for the wrestling team this morning as it boards the bus for Salem, wishing good luck to the Blue Devil grapplers as they look to come home with a state title.
In addition to winning the regional title for a second consecutive year, MHS head coach Josh Schaible was named the Region 1A Coach of the Year for the second time in two years.
Mathews took a dozen wrestlers on Saturday to the regional tournament at Lancaster High School. It was a close call for first place, with Mathews compiling a final team score of 189.5 points, with Westmoreland High School only 7.5 points behind.
