The Mathews High School wrestling team finished fifth overall out of 15 teams competing in Saturday’s Mathews Invitational. Seven of the Blue Devil wrestlers placed in the top four in their individual weight classes.Sophomore Ivan Schaible was the only individual champion for MHS. He went undefeated to place first in the 157 lbs. weight class. With those wins, he now holds a 15-1 season record.Three other Blue Devils were runners up in their weight classes—freshman Franklin Cardenas at 126 lbs., senior Fabian Cardenas at 165 lbs., and senior Noah Wright at 150 lbs. Following the Mathews Invitational, Fabian Cardenas now holds a 14-1 record.Sophomore Salvador Cardenas placed third at 120 lbs., while freshman Za Salvadori (106 lbs.) and sophomore Richard Hahn (175 lbs.) placed fourth.The Mathews wrestlers were scheduled to compete in a meet on Wednesday at King William and will travel to Hampton on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Virginia Duals.
