The Mathews High wrestling team currently holds a 5-0 record after posting wins over Northumberland, Franklin, York, Bruton and Warhill.
The Blue Devil wrestlers kicked off the season last Wednesday, Nov. 29 at North-umberland High School, beating the host Indians, 56-18, and defeating the Franklin Broncos, 48-27.
Senior Noah Wright won both of his matches by pinning his opponents. Jacob Love went 1-1 against these teams, as he won his match against the Broncos by a pin and had a tough loss against Northumberland.
The Devils’ second match was held at York High School on Saturday, where they wrestled teams from three other schools. Mathews won overall, beating York, 52-15; crushing Bruton, 51-6; and coming out on top over Warhill, 42-30.
Sophomore Ivan Schaible has started his season out strong, going undefeated with a record of 5-0. Mikey Ray has won four of his five matches this season, only losing to Bruton in a hard-fought match.
