The Mathews High School wrestling team kicked off its 2010-2011 season with a third-place showing at Saturday’s York Classic. The host Falcons placed first with 148 team points, followed by Menchville with 130 points and Mathews with 121.
Other teams in the tournament included Warwick (99 points), Denbigh (62 points), Kecoughtan (35 points), Lake Taylor (24 points) and Peninsula Catholic (14 points).
"It’s a rebuilding year for the Blue Devil grapplers after graduating nine starters last year," MHS head coach Tom Holaday said. "We have a young team with a lot of potential."
Holaday was pleased with his team’s standing at the York Classic, considering the fact he took only nine wrestlers with him. Senior co-captain C.W. Sorey missed the competition to take the SAT test, while two others are waiting to be released by the doctor for medical problems.
