The Mathews High School wrestling team placed second of 13 teams competing in the Region 1A East tournament, which was held on Friday and Saturday at Parry McCluer High School in Buena Vista.
“We did very well, especially for only having 11 wrestlers,” said MHS head coach Tom Holaday. Seven of those Devil wrestlers placed in the top four in their respective weight classes, including Austin Fravel (195 lbs.) and Isaiah Maultsby (220 lbs.), who each went 3-0 to win regional titles.
Mathews compiled 166 team points, second only to Northampton, which scored 184 points to claim the regional title. The Devils narrowly defeated Parry McCluer (165 points), with Middlesex (133 points) and Essex (130.5 points) rounding out the top five.
