MHS wrestlers place 7th in state tournament

The Mathews High School wrestling team placed seventh in this past weekend’s VHSL Class 1A state tournament, which was held in Salem, finishing the two-day tournament with 72.5 points. Grundy easily won the state title with 312 points, with Grayson County coming in second with 142 points.
Mathews beat out all competitors from Region A, with Northampton placing 11th, Lancaster coming in 13th, Essex in 15th place, Westmoreland in 22nd place, Northumberland in 27th, King and Queen in 28th and Middlesex tied for 29th place.
Sophomore Ivan Schaible (157 lbs.) and senior Fabian Cardenas (165 lbs.) were the top finishers for Mathews, with each placing third in their respective weight classes. Schaible won his third-place match, scoring a pin over Dalton Ashley of Buffalo Gap in 4:03, while Cardenas pinned Gavin Crouse from Galax in 3:54 to place third. Both lost to the eventual champion in the semifinals.
