MHS wrestlers improve to 11-1

The Mathews High School wrestling team held its first home meet last Wednesday, hosting Essex and Northampton in the Devils’ third match of the season.
The Blue Devils overwhelmed the Essex Trojans by a margin of 56-15. The Devils and the Yellow Jackets fought a long match, after battling a tie-breaker. Mathews came out on top, winning by criteria with a score of 42-42.
Franklin Cardenas went 1-1 at Wednesday’s match, while Zac Salvadori won both of his matches due to forfeits. The team traveled to Lancaster High for a duals meet on Saturday. Mathews went 4-1 falling to the eventual champions from Warwick, 39-35, in the first match of the day. Mathews swept the other four opponents, beating Essex, 53-24, Lancaster, 51-24, King and Queen, 66-18, and Franklin, 48-15. Following Saturday’s duals meet, the team’s record now stands at 11-1.
