The Mathews High School wrestling team bounced back from last Wednesday’s performance against Gloucester to go 5-0 in Saturday’s Mathews Duals, defeating Lancaster, Franklin, Sussex, Middlesex and AA opponent Bruton.
"We finally have all 14 weights filled for the first time in two years," MHS head coach Tom Holaday said. The latest additions to the lineup are first-year wrestlers P.J. Johnson (138 lbs.) and Quentin Schaefer (152 lbs.). Johnson, the brother of fellow Mathews matman Eric Johnson, had his first day on varsity Saturday and he went 4-1. Schaefer also went 4-1, with a dramatic come-from-behind win over Franklin with a third-period pin.
Sophomore Caleb Miller moved up in weight class to 113 lbs. and freshman Brett Hogge is now at 106. They got only one match each, which they both won. First-year varsity Devil A.J.
