The Mathews High School wrestling team showed its hard work on Friday at the Virginia Duals in Hampton. Although the tournament was cut short due to the weather, they were one of the few 1A schools to compete in the duals. MHS was paired with two different 6A schools this weekend, although they fell to both.
Their first match-up was with Oscar Smith High School, where they were defeated with a final score of 63-12. Jesse Monastyrly had a lead of 7-0 at the end of the first period, and carried a win for Mathews with a pin early into the second period. Darin Echeverria defeated his opponent in the 190-lbs. weight class, managing to earn a pin with 15 seconds left in the first period.
The second match of the night was with Ocean Lakes High School. Salvador Cardenas was the first wrestler to obtain points for Mathews, winning in overtime by a final 10-7, after the Ocean Lakes wrestler tied the match with an escape in the third period.
