The Mathews High School wrestling team had a busy weekend at Lafayette High School on Friday and Saturday. They attended the James City County school’s Ram Rumble, where each wrestler battled to win the first-place title in their respective weight class.
Sophomore Ivan Schaible was the only MHS wrestler to make it to the finals, where he placed second overall in the 157-pound class. Schaible’s freshman year he placed sixth, making his way up to second in only a year.
After receiving a first-round bye, Schaible scored wins over Deep Creek’s Gurshan Singh, Sam Rodgers of Liberty Christian and Joshua Baum of the host Rams, before losing in the championship bout to Jason Bennett of New Kent.
Salvador Cardenas placed sixth in the tournament for the 120-pound weight class. He had many hard fought matches, and placed higher than he did his freshman year.
