The Mathews High School wrestling team captured the Tidewater District crown last Wednesday night, with the Devil grapplers dominating their foes from King and Queen, King William, Carver and Middlesex.
Mathews hosted the district tournament, defeating King and Queen by a score of 75-6; King William with a final score of 48-27; beating Carver, 42-6, and completing the night with a 64-12 victory over Middlesex. Each wrestler representing Mathews had a great showing in the tournament.
Starting off the night against King and Queen, each wrestler from the 106-lb. weight class to the 150-lb. weight class all had forfeits. Ivan Schaible was the first to wrestle for the night, scoring 10 points in the first period. In the second period, he started off getting a reversal and pinning his opponent with 12 points on the board.
