The Mathews High School varsity softball team kicked off its 2012 season last Thursday with a scrimmage at Tabb. After graduating six starting seniors, including multiple all-district, all-region and all-state selections, the Blue Devils enter the season with key positions to fill.
With a lack of field practice time due to the weather and the extended basketball season, the scrimmage at Tabb allowed the coaching staff and the players to get a better feel for the season and each player’s strengths and weaknesses. Coach Robert Thomas was impressed with the outcome of the scrimmage and felt like in the upcoming weeks the team would come together and become an outstanding team.
The Devils return six players this year—seniors Kaitlin Eriksen, Sydney James and Sydney Morgan and juniors Taylor Denton, Kayla Robins and Sammi Rutter.
