The Mathews High School varsity soccer team picked up two more wins last week, beating the Lancaster Red Devils, 2-1, on March 27 and the Northumberland Indians, 3-0, on Friday.
The Blue Devils had to fight hard against the Red Devils for their win at home, with Lancaster scoring early in the game. Mathews later came back and junior P.J. Johnson scored for the Blue Devils’ first goal. The second half remained scoreless as both teams fought for the advantage. During overtime, junior Justin Jenkins scored Mathews’ second goal for the win.
Friday night, the Devils travelled to Northumberland to face the Indians. Mathews controlled the tempo for most of the game, having 20 shots on goal as opposed to the Indians’ three. Johnson scored all three of the Devils’ goals, assisted by Jacob Johnson, Glenn Musgrove and Kelly Nelson. The Devils stayed more defensively-minded during the second half to preserve the shutout.
