Mathews High lost a close match against Rappahannock but picked up a win against Essex in recent tennis action.
The Mathews Girls’ Tennis Team battled hard but suffered a tough loss of 4-5 against Rappahannock last Thursday. Rappahannock will most likely be the toughest competition for Mathews in the Region A tournament at the end of May. Aly Collins, playing number one, played very strong leaving Megan Knight scoreless in an 8-0 victory. At number two, Amy Collins used lots of deep topspin shots to win against Amy Goszka, 8-5. Mercedes Wells at number three suffered a loss against a very strong Lori Gagnon, 8-4.
Fourth-seed Leanne Moughon also fell to her Rappahanock opponent, Amanda Fallin, 8-3. Kate van Emmerik, number five, played very strong and consistent to earn a win of 8-3 over Emily Gay.
