MHS tennis places 2nd in region; advances to state tourney

Girls’ tennis team secured a state tournament tennis bid, upsetting host number 2 seed Northampton last Thursday in the regional tournament, 5-2.
Mathews got off to a strong start with singles victories by Liberti Carter (6-0, 6-1), Ella Ward (6-0, 6-1), Lily Jarosz (6-0, 6-3) and Jayda Thomas (6-1, 6-4). Ward and Thomas sealed the match win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory while Duff/Carter and Brooklyne Fulford/Jarosz had both recorded first set wins.
On Monday, Mathews traveled to Rappahannock Community College to be defeated by the host Raiders.
Rappahannock is a very strong program,” said coach Jon Hatch. “We competed and played extremely well.”
Mathews will host the Region 1A doubles and singles competition this Wednesday and Thursday, starting at 10 a.m.
