The Mathews High School girls’ tennis season came to an end on Friday at Radford University, as the Region A champions lost to Wilson Memorial in the Group A state semifinals, 5-0.
Several matches were very close, with many of the games going to deuce. The Green Hornets were a Group AA team for the past two years, but were bumped down to Group A this year because of enrollment numbers.
"Our girls played very well; however, Wilson Memorial was just a little better," said MHS head coach LaDonna Crain. "The competition is tough when you get down to the top four teams in the state. I am so proud of each and every one of my players for making it this far.
"The Wilson Memorial coach asked me after the match if we played indoors and year round. I told him we only had four public courts in our community. Then he said they must play at a country club. I told him we do not have one. He could not believe how well our girls played considering the number of courts ...
