The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team upped its record to 3-1 with a convincing shutout of AA Bruton last Thursday, 9-0.
The Devils’ top-seeded singles player Aly Collins sat out last week’s contest because of an injury from the previous match, with her sister Amy moving up to the #1 seed.
Amy Collins was trailing, 3-6, but pulled off an amazing comeback with deep topspin shots and consistent play, winning five games in a row to defeat Nicole James, 8-6.
Mercedes Wells, at number two, also played very strong tennis to defeat Amber Baden-Lobes, 8-1. Playing number three, left-handed Leanne Moughon used lots of topspin to win against Sasha Morris, 8-1. Kate van Emmerik, playing number four, won easily, 8-0, against her opponent Kelly Duggan. Carlyn Tillage at number five, had the longest match, played diligently and battled hard for the win against Sydney Wojcreszak, 9-7; she also came back from being down 3-6 to take the win.
