The Mathews High School tennis team traveled to West Point last Thursday for the team’s second matchup with the Lady Pointers. The Devils won the match, 6-0. After an hour rain delay, there was not enough daylight left to finish the doubles matches.
As they have done all season long, the Lady Devils came out strong in singles. Elizabeth Ransone defeated her opponent Jane Hagan, 7-5, 7-5, in a well-played match at number one.
Kate van Emmerik won her three-hour match, 6-4, and after losing a difficult second set, 4-6, won the third set, 6-3, against opponent Sara Sheffield at second seed. Morgan Johnson played strongly at third seed, defeating her opponent Delanie Beattie, 6-1, 6-3.
Ashley Hudgins played well and won, 6-1, 6-2 over opponent S. Prince at fourth seed. Alexis Wells played strong and beat her opponent Tia Lee, 6-3, 6-1, at number five. Rachel Stewart dominated her match at sixth-seed single against opponent Francesca Hodges, 6-1, 6-0.
