The Mathews High School tennis team picked up a 9-0 win over Bruton last Wednesday, falling Thursday to another AA opponent, York High School.
Playing on its home court, Mathews blanked the Panthers for the second time this year. Coming back from a sprained ankle, #1 seed Aly Collins beat Nicole James, 7-2, in a tie breaker after tying 8-8.
At #2, Amy Collins took charge and defeated Amber Baden-Lobes, 8-1. Third-seed Mercedes Wells won against Sasha Morris, 8-3. Leanne Moughon played number four and defeated Kelly Duggan, 8-0. At #5, Kate van Emmerik won against Sydney Wojcreszak, 8-1. Carlyn Tillage as #6 won, 8-2, against Rachel Lankford.
In doubles play, the top-seeded team of Amy and Aly Collins took charge and defeated James and Baden-Lobes, 8-2. Wells and Moughon played #2 doubles, beating Duggan and Lankford, 8-1.
