Mathews High School tennis player Faith Lewis, above, faced off against Maddy Green of Middlesex last week in the Region A championship to earn a spot in the VHSL singles tournament. Although Lewis fell to Green, she had a great season, ending as a first-team All Tidewater District and first-team All Region selection. Teammate Chelsea Lowe was a second-team All Tidewater District selection. Lewis, Lowe and the rest of the MHS team will enter the VHSL championships, traveling to Region B champion Buffalo Gap on Friday. In other Mathews tennis news, MHS head coach Jon Hatch will host a free tennis clinic for all girls ages 6, 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Mathews courts. The clinic will also involve the girls’ parents. Introduction to various strokes, equipment, and rules of the game will be covered. Extra rackets are available for those in need.
