It was a tough week for the Mathews High School varsity softball team, as the Lady Devils dropped a pair of games to Rappahannock and Poquoson. MHS got back to their winning ways on Monday, beating Northumberland on the road, 6-4.
Errors proved costly last Thursday, as Mathews fell to the visiting Rappahannock Raiders, 7-2. The Lady Devils held a 2-0 lead until the fourth inning, when a couple of Raider base runners, coupled with three mental errors, led to four runs for the Northern Neck District frontrunners.
The Rappahannock pitcher kept the Mathews bats silent for most of the evening, only allowing three hits in seven innings. Taylor South drove in the two Mathews runs with a single while Kaitlin Eriksen and Sydney James had the only other hits. "With the overall youth of this year’s team, we expect errors, but we have to cut down on the mental errors we make each game," head coach Robert Thomas said.
