MHS softball advances to regionals

Following Monday’s 11-2 win over the visiting King and Queen Tigers, the Mathews High School varsity softball team earned a spot in next week’s Region 1A tournament.
The Lady Devils will head to the Eastern Shore next Thursday, May 23, to face the top-seeded Chincoteague Ponies.

Mathews controlled the tempo of Monday’s game from the opening pitch, with ace Christiana Wood striking out the side in each of the first two innings. Wood would go on to strike out a dozen batters while holding the Tigers to five hits over seven innings of play in the win.
Prior to the start of the regular season finale, Wood and fellow senior Laura Rowe were honored by fans and teammates in the team’s Senior Night festivities.
In addition to getting the win on the mound, Wood went three-for-three at the plate, including a triple. Rowe and Addy Lowe collected two hits apiece, with Rowe and Angel Shultz stealing multiple bases for the Lady Devils.
