MHS soccer teams fall in regional quarterfinals

The Mathews High School varsity soccer teams’ seasons came to an end last Thursday, with both the boys and girls falling in the first round of the Region 1A tournament.

The #3 seed Westmoreland Eagles shut out the sixth-seeded Lady Devils last Thursday, 5-0. With the win, Westmoreland advanced to the regional semifinals against #1 seed West Point.
The Lady Devils had few shots on goal, none of which led to a goal. Shots were taken by Adelle Hudgins, Shelby Ray and Hailey Denkinger.
MHS boys
The Mathews boys, meanwhile, faced off against Northampton in their regional playoff game, falling 11-0. The MHS boys ended 2023 with a regular season record of 7-10.
The only shot on goal for Mathews was taken by Seth James. Goalie Logan Kostyal, had many saves this game, but the boys could not pull through to a win. Northampton, the #3 seed, advanced to Tuesday’s regional semifinal game against #2 seed West Point.
