MHS soccer still looking for first win

This year, everything is new about the Mathews High School varsity soccer team. The school hired new head coach Chris Clifford, new assistant coach Andrew Fry, and the team has seven new varsity players: Kai McCann, Jack Vrooman, Anna Hudgins, P.J. Johnson, Justin Jenkins, Hans Saunders and Landon Garrett.

Jacob Johnson, Cody Greenfield, Matt DeForge, Matt Marquardt, Eric Johnson, Glenn Musgrove and Tyler Tillman are returning from last year’s squad. Tillman and Musgrove serve as team captains.

The team has had a rocky start so far, with five losses. The Devils’ first game was at Warhill on March 13, with Warhill winning, 8-1. The team was adjusting to the new chemistry and had a difficult time advancing the ball to the offensive end and following through to score. Mathews had a total of 11 shots on goal with Jenkins scoring Mathews’ first goal of the season and Eric Johnson providing the assist.
