MHS runners excel at state meet

Mathews track athletes turned in superb performances at last weekend’s 1A/2A state track and field championships at Radford University, with every competitor earning All-State honors for finishing in the top eight places in their respective races.
Justin Adams finished fourth in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:36.14. Ellie Gale had a stellar performance in the 100-meter hurdles. She placed seventh in the preliminary race on Friday and seventh again on Saturday in the finals with a time of 18.59. Gale also earned All-State accolades with the other members of the 4x800 meter relay team—Elizabeth Stokes, Mariah Robinson and Tracy Green—coming in eighth with a time of 13:01.27.
Then came Kate van Emmerik, finishing fifth in the 1,600-meter run. She got a personal best and broke the school record that she had set the previous week at the 1A East Regional Championship. The final racer from Mathews was Sam Jasinski. He ran the 800-meter run in a personal record time of ...
