MHS rowers win 14 races Saturday at home regatta

Under cold, cloudy, and windy conditions, the Mathews High School crew hosted its second of three spring regattas at Williams Wharf Saturday. Although the regatta was small, with only West Potomac, Gloucester, Hickory and Mathews high schools competing, the Blue Devils saw steady action all day long.
Fielding 30 entries in 23 possible events, Mathews rowers pulled in 14 gold, four silver, and 5 bronze finishes. MHS novices showed an improved performance over their first races two weeks ago with Alec Thompson, Josh Miles, Caleb Johnson and Zach Cummings combining with Taylor Hummel, Sammi Fravel, Raeann Love and Hunter Carey and coxswains Alyssa Curko and Maddy Hobert to take first place in the novice mixed four and eight events.
The novice girls also won gold in the women’s novice four and eight. The novice boys took second in the men’s novice four event and then took a quantum leap when they then combined with varsity men Phillip Machen, Kyle Moran, Tucker Blackwell, Lance...
