Mathews rowers won five races, as well as taking four silver and one bronze finish out of 18 events in Saturday’s 25th annual Mathews High School Regatta.
Out of a field of 17 schools from the Tidewater, Richmond and Northern Virginia regions, Mathews took third place for both the William F. Owens Team Efficiency Points Trophy for the men (45.6 percent) and the Catharine K. Owens Efficiency Points Trophy for the women (44.4 percent).
The regatta has come a long way since its first run of six teams in 1988. This year’s registration saw more than 950 rowers and coaching staff launch 273 boats in 46 events. With an estimated crowd of 3,300 spectators, Williams Wharf was packed from dawn until 4:30 p.m.
