Mathews High School rowers posted one second-place finish and two third-place finishes in Saturday’s Darrell Winslow Regatta at the Sandy Run Regional Park, Occoquan.
For many of the rowers, this was their first racing day on the Class A Occoquan course. The first event for Mathews was the qualifying heat for the men’s first four. Phillip Machen, Kyle Moran, Sam Hutson, Tucker Blackwell and coxswain Brandon Smith pulled a 5:34.9, qualifying for the final behind Langley (5:32.2) and ahead of WT Woodson (5:42.1). In the finals, the Blue Devils took third behind South County and Langley and ahead of Great Bridge, Woodson and Fairfax.
For the men’s second four event, Bill Riley, Dominick Cummings, Matt Oliver, Jared Reay and cox Josh Miles raced to a second-place finish (6:04.5) behind South County (5:45.9) and ahead of TC Williams (6:14.5), Fairfax (6:15.3), Gloucester (6:39.7) and First Colonial (7:08.9).
