MHS ranks 7th; GHS ties for 19th place in VHSL athletic cup standings

The Virginia High School League recently announced the winners of its 2023-2024 National Guard Cup for athletics and for academic activities, presented by the Virginia Army National Guard.
Mathews ended ranked seventh out of 31 Class 1 schools in the athletic standings with a grand total of 167.5 points (82.5 in the spring and 85 points in the fall). Mathews earned its spring points for the Blue Devils’ performances in wrestling, boys’ track and girls’ tennis, with the most points going to the girls’ tennis team, which had made it to the VHSL state quarterfinals.
Gloucester finished in a tie for 19th place among 30 Class 4 schools with 45 points (22.5 points each for the Dukes’ baseball and softball team performances). Auburn took first place in athletic standings among Class 1 schools, while Atlee won the athletic excellence cup for Class 4 schools.
