MHS netters fall to New Kent

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team fell 5-4 at New Kent Monday. While the young Lady Devils’ squad put forth a solid effort, they fell short battling the strong, senior-laden Group 3A school, 5-4.
Elizabeth Ransone dropped a tough 8-4 mathews to the Trojans’ top-seed Clare Morris. Morgan Johnson stepped up to fill in the second-seed singles spot because Kate vanEmmerik was out due to illness, beating Britta Vanderpourt, 8-6.
Ashley Hudgins played well but fell to the experienced Gina Sledd, 2-8, at third seed. Alexis Wells posted an 8-5 win for Mathews, by serving strong with an ace for match point over Kate Ilch. Rachel Stewart fell 1-8 to Brianna Wayman at number 5. Emma Wood stepped up to her first varsity position and defeated Amee Stacey, 8-2.
With the team 3-3 after singles, the Lady Devils gave it everything they had in doubles matches. Ransone and Johnson fell, 3-8, at number one to Morris and Sledd, as did Stewart and Wood at number 3 to Williams and ...
